Which BFT Models This Applies To

BFT produces keypad and intercom hardware across several product families, and the part you need depends on the generation mounted at your gate. The Q.BO keypad series, including the Q.BO Touch and Q.BO WiFi variants, uses a different mounting footprint and communication protocol than the older Radix keypads. If your intercom is a BFT Vox or Vox WiFi model, the head unit and base station are paired at the factory; swapping in an unmatched unit will leave you with a dead call button and no diagnostic feedback.

To identify your unit, check the label on the back or underside of the keypad housing. You’re looking for a part number starting with P for keypads or V for intercoms, followed by a four-digit code. The Q.BO Touch, for instance, carries P111001 or similar. If the label is sun-faded, measure the cutout: Q.BO units need a 3.3-inch by 4.7-inch opening, while Radix housings are smaller at 2.8 by 3.9 inches. That half-inch difference matters if you’re trying to reuse the existing bracket.

We carry both OEM BFT modules and quality aftermarket equivalents from manufacturers who reverse-engineer the communication protocols. For a property with an older Radix system that’s been discontinued, an aftermarket unit with BFT-compatible wiring is often the only practical path. For a Q.BO WiFi under warranty, we typically recommend staying with OEM to preserve the cloud-connectivity terms. We’ll tell you which route makes sense once we see the unit.

Signs Your BFT Keypad & Intercom Repair Is Failing

• Intermittent code acceptance. The keypad lights up but only accepts your PIN every third or fourth try. This usually points to a degrading membrane switch layer beneath the buttons, where the conductive trace is wearing through. In Hialeah’s humidity, the adhesive holding that membrane also softens, letting moisture creep in and bridge contacts that shouldn’t touch.
• Visible condensation or corrosion behind the lens. If you can see fogging or greenish buildup on the circuit board through the keypad face, the housing seal has failed. BFT housings are IP-rated, but the gasket compresses over time and South Florida’s driving rain finds the gap. Once corrosion reaches the backplane, cleaning rarely restores reliable function.
• Intercom produces static or no audio on either end. The Vox series uses a two-wire balanced audio line that’s sensitive to ground-loop interference. A failing intercom head will often pass the self-test but distort actual voice transmission. We’ve traced this to cracked surface-mount capacitors on the audio board, a failure that accelerates in heat.
• Gate opens without any code entered. This is the most serious symptom. It typically means the keypad’s relay output is stuck closed, either from a shorted driver transistor or moisture bridging the relay contacts. The gate is no longer secured by the access device, and the system should be taken offline until repaired.
• Backlight flickers or dies entirely. The LED driver circuit runs warm, and in a sealed housing that heat has nowhere to go. Over three to five years in Hialeah conditions, the driver IC or its supporting capacitor fails. The keypad may still function in daylight, but visitors can’t see the buttons after dark.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a safe middle ground here, and then there’s the point where you need the right meter and the right parts in the van.

What you can check safely: verify that the keypad is receiving 24V AC or DC at the terminal block, depending on your BFT control board model. A basic multimeter will tell you if the problem is upstream. You can also check whether the housing screws are tight and whether the faceplate gasket is visibly compressed or torn. If the unit is simply loose in its mount, vibration can cause intermittent connections.

Where DIY goes wrong: BFT keypads store their code memory and output configuration in firmware. Replacing the head without the proper programming tool, or attempting to clone settings manually, often leaves the gate stuck open, stuck closed, or responding to factory-default codes that any passerby can guess. The intercom pairing process for Vox WiFi units requires a specific sequence timed to the base station’s learn mode. Get it wrong and you’ve bricked a $200+ module. We’ve also seen homeowners bridge the wrong terminals with a screwdriver and take out the control board’s auxiliary output, turning a $250 repair into a $600 one.

We’re not going to tell you a keypad swap is brain surgery. It’s not. But the documentation you leave behind matters as much as the part you install. Name what you found. Name what it costs.
