Which FAAC Models This Applies To

FAAC operators share common mounting geometry across several series, but the fabrication needs differ in ways that matter for parts matching. The 400 series (424, 422, 402) uses a cast-aluminum bracket that fatigues at the bolt holes; the 746 series uses a heavier steel pivot plate that tends to corrode where the powder coat gets nicked during install. The S800 and 720 sliding-gate models need different weldment entirely - track brackets and guide-roller mounts rather than swing-arm hardware.

To identify what you need, check the silver FAAC data plate on the motor housing. The model prefix tells us the bracket pattern; the serial number tells us the production run, which matters because FAAC revised the 422 arm geometry in 2017. We carry both pre- and post-revision patterns. For welding work, we use ER70S-6 mild steel wire on structural brackets and 4043 aluminum wire on OEM FAAC castings when the crack is repairable. Aftermarket equivalents exist for most brackets - we source from Chamberlain and US Automatic where the fit is verified - but for load-bearing pivot welds on gates over 16 feet, we prefer FAAC OEM steel or our own fabricated equivalent with full-penetration welds.

Signs Your FAAC Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags 2-3 inches on the latch side when closed. This usually means the bottom hinge weldment has cracked at the post, or the FAAC actuator bracket has elongated its bolt slots from cyclic loading. In Hialeah’s coral-rock soil, gate posts settle unevenly, which puts shear stress on welds that were designed for pure tension.
• You hear a metallic clunk at the end of each open or close cycle. The FAAC limit cam is hitting its stop, but the arm bracket has enough play to let the gate coast past the set point. The bracket-to-post weld is often cracked underneath where you can’t see it without a flashlight.
• The actuator arm separates from the gate by a visible gap. The clevis pin is intact, but the mounting plate has pulled its weld beads away from the gate frame. This happens on hollow aluminum gates where the original weld was a surface tack rather than a penetration weld.
• Rust weeps from the bracket-to-post joint after rain. Moisture has found its way through a cracked weld and is corroding the interface from inside. By the time you see orange staining, the steel behind the weld is often thinner than it looks.
• The gate motor runs but the gate barely moves, or stalls mid-travel. The FAAC operator is healthy, but a cracked fabrication bracket is absorbing the push instead of transferring it. The motor’s torque limiter trips to protect itself.

DIY or Call Us?

There’s a short list an owner can check safely. Verify the clevis pin hasn’t walked out. Confirm the gate isn’t binding in the receiver because the post shifted. Tighten the FAAC arm’s jam nuts if they’ve loosened from vibration. Beyond that, welding a loaded gate bracket carries real risk - the gate can shift while you’re working, and a 300-pound aluminum or steel leaf has no warning before it moves.

We don’t recommend DIY welding on FAAC operator brackets for two reasons specific to this hardware. First, FAAC’s cast aluminum brackets require TIG welding with 4043 filler and preheat to 350°F; without it, the repair cracks in weeks. Second, the bracket geometry affects the operator’s mechanical advantage - move the pivot point half an inch and the FAAC 422 stalls on a heavy gate.
